Fabiane's

Here's some pictures of a mocha and chai latte with chocolate croissant in Fabiane's.

Not only is this my first post in a long time, it's also my first since our having a baby, since moving to Williamsburg, since changing jobs, in Williamsburg, and posted in the Bloggr app on my new Nexus S. Nearly maximizing my potential firsts. It is however likely my last of 2010.

Dang. It seems I cannot edit posts written outside this app, tag using known tags, pick a location I'm not currently near, pick a location from an attached photo, or even retain the correct photo orientation which the camera and gallery are aware of! That's a lot of little shortcomings I didn't expect.

Newspapers are old

Newspapers are old. They may be technically modern, but they largely seem out of place in whatever post postmodern age we're in now. Consider then this photo. Can you make it out? Clearly even when papers were new and or necessary, they were still considered inconvenient to hold and read, enough so to warrant an aiding device. In this age that's only intensified, and yet devices such ar this have mostly disappeared. More on what I'm getting at in another, non-mobile post.

I suppose clouds aren't always bad

I suppose clouds aren't always a bad thing. Particularly in black and white photography where a blank white sky highlights any dust or scratches. This is 35th st west of Madison ave. Note to self: make my black and white film photography site after I have interviewed successfully. Wow. Mobile blogging from a phone pad really makes you notice the frequent double consonents in English. Two notes to self: edit for spelling and visit the Pierpont Morgan library and museum soon.

Big Dialogs + Netbooks = Problems

I’ve noticed this problem a few times, and most every time it’s had to do with a dialog from a Java program. Image you’re using Eclipse and you’ve installed the Android SDK Plugin. You now want to make a new Android Project, but you’re on a netbook with a 600px high screen, so you’ll be presented with this:

What’s wrong with that?

General audio tips from a listener

Before you screencast or podcast try to do the following 12 suggestions:
  1. Get a microphone that has a low noise floor, directional pickup area and a decent wide band. It needn't cost more than $80 unless you have a penchant for gold plated lead over black plastic.

Links not about fire

I don't really blog. So you and I will find the following a little... unusual:
Here's a list of links I found interesting. Firstly, it's certainly not everything, secondly, I hope the New York Times has done away with that barrier between readers and their articles. It might be they've only removed it for recent stories, so this won't archive well, and for that I apologize for linking to them at all.

New York Times: The Better Pope.
New York Times: Experts on the Volcanic Eruption (paraphrasing) All together now: "Eyjafjallajokull"
New York Daily News: Teaboinics. [Misspelled protests regarding Government and English's place in it].
Youtube: While you'll see many children appear smart by "using" and iPad (updated from baby iPhone use), bear in mind the principle scales all the way down to house cats, with less cute vocalizations.

Fire escape has become unnecessary

Regarding the fire, there are sparks flying from the building 285 Grand street, and water is getting sprayed onto the sparks as they fall. The NYC Buildings crew is up on the smaller crane sawing through the fire-escape's metal and throwing it down bit by bit.

The street closing remain as:

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Building getting taken down slowly.

This morning, in reference to the fire, Cheng Sheng gets to be open on the south east corner of Grand and Eldridge. Otherwise the street closings are very similar. News crews seem less present, some moved to Allen at the bus stop. The large crane moved last night onto Eldridge and stayed there. This leaves Grand looking quite empty. The windows seem to have been fully removed, probably to avoid any of the broken and already heat-cracked glass from falling.

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

There's a crane and OEM vehicle.

The attention to the fire is reduced to two fire trucks, some ambulances just in case the building comes down, a NYC buildings team, and a mysterious glistening "OEM" coach, filled with suited self important types.  Oh, of course there's 3 TV crews. OEM stands for Operational Emergency Management. My opinion is they're sort of late now. But who knows, maybe they have espresso machines on board for the fighters and engineers to use during breaks.

There's still smoke.

The fire surprised us in lasting right into the morning. And I don't mean 1am, I mean 10am. So when we walked past last night at 10pm on our way to a restaurant, the fire had already started, but no one had noticed. And when we returned around 12am fire crews had been on the scene for some time, perhaps 30 minutes already, but they were still working on closing off Grand from Allen Street.

That morning, it was clear that there was quite a bit of damage to not just the primary building (283) which is the third from Eldridge street, but also the buildings left and right of it, and at the corner containing a pharmacy/cosmetics store, the 2rd building in containing the fish market, and the 4th building containing a market. The shorter building with Pho Grand at the street level was also closed due to smoke damage, but did not apparently have fire damage.

Videos of the Fire on Grand Street

Upfront: Apologies for the noisy in-camera audio; consider muting these.
April 11th - 12th: Fire on Grand Street in Chinatown Manhattan 10002.
Here are some videos of the fire, crowds, and city employees handling the situation.

Had I realized Blogger would resize my 640x480 videos and Gaussian them I wouldn't have bothered... Maybe I could have spent the time to make them embeddable myself.

Here's the links of choices from the series of my videos on Vimeo:
